Progressive Life Insurance – Does Flo Really Sell Term Life Insurance?

progressive life insurance

Progressive is a household name in auto insurance. You know Flo from the commercials. Maybe you even have your car insurance with them. But did you know they also offer Progressive Term Life Insurance?

So, when I saw a life insurance link on Progressive’s website, my first thought was… Wait a second. Does Progressive offer term life insurance?”

The answer? Yes… but only in certain states.

Life insurance policies are available from this company if you live in one of 15 specific states.

If you live anywhere else? You’re getting sent to a third-party insurance agency.

This life insurance company review breaks it all down for you.

Company Overview

Progressive was founded in 1937 and has grown into one of the largest auto insurance companies in the U.S., insuring over 30 million vehicles.

When it comes to term life insurance, though? Things are… complicated.

  • If you live in Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, or Wisconsin, Progressive does offer life insurance policies directly.
  • If you live anywhere else? Progressive hands you off to a third-party insurance agency.

So, while they technically sell term life insurance, most people clicking that “Get a Quote” button are buying from a third-party agency. Geico does something similar to this.

Progressive’s Financial Ratings

As of 2025, Progressive has strong financial ratings:

  • AM Best: A+
  • Standard & Poor’s: AA
  • Moody’s: Aa

For life insurance? That’s where things get tricky. Since they only sell policies in select states, their presence in the life insurance market isn’t nearly as strong as their auto insurance dominance.

Does Progressive Have Term Life Insurance?

Yes… but only in 15 states.

For everyone else? Progressive redirects you to a third-party insurance agency.

Here’s what Progressive’s website says:

“Progressive Advantage® Life Insurance is offered through Efinancial, LLC, which is not affiliated with Progressive and is solely responsible for its products and services.”

Translation? If you’re not in one of the 15 states, you’re not actually dealing with Progressive.

Can You Bundle Life Insurance With Progressive Auto Insurance?

Nope.

While companies like State Farm, Allstate, and Nationwide offer bundling discounts for home, auto, and life insurance, Progressive does not.

Since their life insurance policies are limited to certain states or outsourced to a third party, there’s no bundling discount for life insurance.

No Progressive perks. No Flo-approved savings.

So, what types of life insurance does Progressive offer?

Progressive Term Life Insurance – Is It Worth It?

Looking for term life insurance through Progressive? You might want to shop around first.

Progressive’s Term Life Policy Options:

Two types of term life insurance are available:

  • Standard Term Policy – Once you purchase this policy, you cannot increase your coverage unless you go through full underwriting again.
  • Flexible Term Policy – This allows you to increase your coverage without medical underwriting, but only if you do it within the first 10 years and within 3 months of a qualifying event.

Coverage Limits & Requirements

  • Coverage amounts range from $50,000 – $1,000,000
  • The maximum coverage amount available decreases with age.
  • You can only have one Progressive term life policy.
  • You must be tobacco-free for 12 months to qualify for non-smoker rates.

Term policies offer the choice of term lengths in one-year increments between 2 and 30 years.

Progressive’s term life insurance policies do not have a conversion privilege. If you become uninsurable, you won’t be able to convert your policy to universal life insurance or whole life insurance.

Coverage lasts until the end of the level term period you choose. Compare that to companies that continue coverage as an annual renewable term.

We haven’t found any underwriting guidelines yet, so we have no idea how Progressive underwrites high-risk health conditions, but I am guessing that this is not their focus.

Progressive’s “Flexible” Policy – Not So Flexible?

The Flexible Term Policy sounds good in theory, but here’s the catch:

  • You must experience a qualifying life event to increase your coverage.
  • You have only 3 months after the event to request the increase.
  • You can add between $25,000 and $200,000 per event—but not always the full amount.
  • You cannot extend the length of your policy, just the coverage amount.

Qualifying life events include:

  • Getting married or entering a civil union/domestic partnership
  • Getting divorced or ending a civil union/domestic partnership
  • Buying a home that will be your primary residence
  • Adding a child to your family through birth, adoption, or marriage

Requesting additional coverage after a qualifying life event involves completing one simple form that asks what type of event occurred, when, and how much additional coverage is requested.

Progressive Term Life Insurance Rates – Are They Competitive?

You can get a Progressive life insurance quote from their website, and that’s what we did to see how much Progressive’s life insurance costs compared to competitors.

We ran a quote for a 40-year-old male non-smoker in Pennsylvania to compare Progressive vs. Protective Life (a top-rated term life insurer).

Company$100,000 (10-Year)$500,000 (10-Year)$750,000 (10-Year)
Progressive$14.92$42.59$59.89
Protective$8.48$18.27$24.64
Company$100,000 (15-Year)$500,000 (15-Year)$750,000 (15-Year)
Progressive$16.47$50.37$71.55
Protective$9.28$19.89$27.07
Company$100,000 (20-Year)$500,000 (20-Year)$750,000 (20-Year)
Progressive$19.02$63.12$90.69
Protective$10.46$28.39$39.82

Verdict? Progressive Term Life Insurance is Expensive

If you’re considering Progressive term life insurance, know this:

  • It costs significantly more than top-rated companies like Protective Life, Banner Life, or Corebridge Financial.
  • Their flexibility is limited—coverage increases depend on life events, and you can’t extend the term length.
  • You’re stuck with just one policy—you can’t buy additional coverage with Progressive.

If you’re looking for affordable term life insurance with better flexibility and pricing, you’re better off getting quotes from Banner Life, Protective Life, or Corebridge Financial.

Progressive Whole Life Insurance

Progressive does not offer whole life insurance.

Even in the 15 states where Progressive sells life insurance, they only offer term life policies.

Consider companies like MassMutualGuardian, or Penn Mutual if you want whole-life insurance.

Progressive Final Expense Insurance

Does Progressive offer final expense insurance?

Nope.

If you need a final expense policy, check out Corebridge Financial, Transamerica, Colonial Penn, or Gerber Life.

What Do Progressive Life Insurance Policies Offer?

Progressive offers basic term life insurance if you’re lucky enough to live in their 15-state coverage area.

However, they don’t have many common life insurance riders other companies offer.

  • Children’s term rider? Nope.
  • Accidental death rider? Nope.
  • Waiver of premium? Nope.

Aviation and Competitive Activities

If you participate in private aviation, coverage is excluded for death from private aviation or jumping from planes. The same holds true if you participate in competitive racing on land or in the water.

If you want a term policy with great customization options, check out Lincoln Financial or John Hancock.

Progressive Life Insurance Underwriting

Policies are underwritten by Progressive Life Insurance Company in Cleveland, Ohio.

As far as Progressive underwriting guidelines, we have not found anything yet.

Since it appears that the policies are instant approval, it’s a safe bet to assume underwriting is conservative and targeting healthy applicants with its products.

We’ll update this as soon as we learn more.

Life Insurance Customer Service

Need help with your Progressive life insurance policy?

  • If you’re in one of the 15 states where Progressive sells life insurance, you may be able to get help directly from Progressive.
  • You must contact someone else if you’re in another state since your policy isn’t from Progressive.

So, if you call Progressive’s customer service line for help with your life insurance… they might tell you to call someone else.

Final Thoughts

So, does Progressive sell life insurance?

Yes—but only in 15 states.

You can buy basic term life insurance directly from Progressive in those states.

If you live elsewhere, you’re getting redirected to a third party, so you’re not buying from Progressive.

Here’s the bottom line:

  • Progressive is a great auto insurance company.
  • But they’re not the best option for life insurance.

If you want real life insurance from a company that specializes in it, we can help.
